Unlike many other lotteries, Mega Millions has its drawings on Tuesday and Friday nights at 11:00pm Eastern Time. Tickets can be bought up to 10:45pm Eastern on the day of the drawing.
Mega Million tickets originally went on sale on August 21, 1996 in Georgia, Illinois, Maryland, Massachusetts, Virginia, and Michigan. Each tickets costs $1 and players pick five different numbers from 1 to 56 from the white balls and one gold or Mega Ball number from 1 to 46.
To win the jackpot, participants must match all white and gold balls. Winners can then choose from either a lump sum cash payment or an annuity payment. The annuity option is paid over 26 years.
Prize amounts from $250,000 and down are set amounts, but the jackpot can change and grow. Since 2002, jackpots have started with a minimum of $12 million and if there is no winner, the amount is carried over to the next drawing. Chances of winning any prize are 1:39.
