Twenty three municipalities across Ontario who act as host areas for the Ontario Lottery and Gaming Corporation's casinos and slots-at-racetrack facilities, have received their quarterly payouts by the lottery group.

The OLG pays out four times a year based on the government's fiscal year (April to March).

In total, these host municipalities received $18.4 million in non tax gaming revenue payments this quarter. To date, the lottery corporation has distributed $778.1 million to the municipalities.

Essentially, municipalities receive 5% of the casino's gross slot machine beginning with the first 450 slot machines, followed by a further 2% from additional machines above 450.

Municipalities are free to do with the funds as they wish, and they are usually used to improve social causes or institutions.

In addition, Ontario will allocate 2% of gross revenue from slot machines at OLG casinos and gaming facilities to problem gambling programs.

Since 1975, the Ontario Lottery and Gaming Corporation's facilities, ranging from casinos to slots and lotteries, have generated over $34 billion for the benefit of the province.

Sault Ste. Marie Invests Payouts in Hospital

After receiving its quarterly payout from the OLG, the host municipality of Sault Ste. Marie will put the $340,500 towards assisting the Sault Area Hospital and physician recruitment program.

The municipality hosts OLG's Casinos Sault Ste. Marie, which opened in 1999.

"OLG Casino Sault Ste. Marie has been an important partner and economic force within our community since 1999," said MPP, David Orazietti. "The presence of this facility not only creates employment opportunities, but also provides ongoing revenue that enables us to invest in municipal services and important local projects."

Sault Ste. Marie donates $1 million a year to the new hospital, and has committed to do so for a 13 year period.
