Blue Jays Favored in 2013 MLB Season Opener
With the 2013 MLB season now officially underway, the million dollar baseball betting question is which of the 30 teams will win the World Series this year? For baseball fans in Canada, their money will undoubtedly be on the sole Canadian team in the League - the Toronto Blue Jays.
In their season opener tonight (Tuesday, April 2), the Blue Jays will host the Cleveland Indians and as such have been posted as the -1.5 point favorites at most online sport betting sites, including Canuck-friendly Bodog. And for good reason, considering the major "buzz" surrounding the team from Toronto.
2013 MLB Season Officially Underway
However, the 2013 Major League Baseball (MLB) season officially kicked off Sunday, March 31 with a game between ardent AL West rivals - the Texas Rangers and their hosts, the Houston Astros, which the latter won by a convincing 8-2.
The next day, 24 out of the League's remaining 28 teams got their chance to step up to the plate and swing for the rafters, each with the same aim - to start off the season with a win, and maintain that winning form to the playoffs and the 2013 World Series (from October 23 to October 31).
Of course, for every winner there has to be a loser, and there were plenty of both on Monday.
For instance, the game between the Boston Red Sox and their most famous rivals the New York Yankees, saw many MLB betting fans backing the home team - the Yankees - to win, particularly considering the Red Sox are seen by many as a team in "flux".
Red Sox Thump Yankees 8-2 in Big Apple
But to the surprise of the predominantly Yankees fans, the Red Sox traveled south intending to take a big bite out of the Big Apple, which is precisely what they did. They racked up a convincing 8-2 victory, sending the home team into their locker room with their tails between their legs.
Similarly, the Chicago Cubs had a corker of an opening game at the Pittsburgh Pirates, notching up a 3-1 victory. In the process, they broke their opening game "curse," which since 2009 has seen the team from Illinois fail to win their first game of the season. The Cub's Anthony Rizzo was on fire, managing to smash a two-runner off home team starter, A.J. Burnett.
But there is no doubt that one of the sweetest opening day victories belongs to the Los Angeles Dodgers, who had the unenviable task of hosting defending World Series champions, the San Francisco Giants. However, the Dodgers more than rose to the occasion, notching up a convincing 4-0 win. They also earned themselves bragging rights for felling the mighty Giants.
