Canada Has One WSOP Bracelet So Far
After last year's World Series of Poker Main Event was won by a Canadian, Jonathan Duhamel, all eyes are on Canada again to see if a repeat performance can be expected.
With the WSOP currently underway in Las Vegas, we are pleased to announce that Tyler Bonkowski became the first Canadian in this year's event to grab a bracelet for his country, after he won the $3,000 Limit Hold 'em Event on Saturday.
Bonkowski beat a field of 337 players to take top prize of $220,817 in Event 14, which is considered one of the biggest limit hold 'em tournaments at the WSOP.
This is Bonkowski's first WSOP bracelet and he was extremely excited about the win.
"Winning the gold bracelet is huge," he said after his victory. "All I could think about last night was I was third in chips with 18 players left, and that's still so much play to go. All I could think about was winning. Just kept telling myself - 'you're going to play your best and things will happen if it happens'. I tried to take my mind off it, but it was tough."
Down 250,000
Bronkowski didn't have an easy victory and at one point he was down 12:1 during the heads up stage against Brandon Demes.
"When I was down 250,000, I was really made, but I didn't let it affect my play at all," he said.
"But it was very frustrating, then I got a couple of hands in a row and I started playing with confidence again and it just kind of went on a roll."
Second placed winner, Demes, took home $136,419. Thirty six players were in the money at the end of the game, out of a total prize pool of $920,010.
