Sunday's $150,000 B.C. Derby (Gr 3) at Hastings Racecourse in Canada for 3-year-olds drew an 11-horse field, including 42/1 longshot Majesticality, who caused an upset by winning the 1 1/8 mile race.

Like something out of a Hollywood movie, when the race got underway, Majesticality got off to a poor start with jockey Richard Hamel aboard, not that the racegoers noticed as they could not keep their eyes off the favourites.

And for most of the race Hamel kept Majesticality in check near the back of the field until coming into the final turn he brought the gelding four wide and asked him for more. To the surprise of racegoers, the thoroughbred answered.

Majesticality chased down the leaders to eventually cross the line first, covering the B.C. Derby in a time of 1:50.80. He finished half a length clear of Crew Leader in second, while favourite Cherokee Notion held on for third place.

Said Hamel after the race, 'I saw a lot of traffic in front of me going down the backside so when I got the chance I moved Majesticality to the outside. Then he slipped into the gear we needed and it ended up being a great trip.'

The B.C. Derby was Hamel's second win of the day, after he earlier won the Sir Winston Churchill Handicap aboard Senor Rojo.

Said Majesticality's trainer, Barbara Heads, 'Richard is riding so well right now and he had a lot of faith in this horse all year. We never wanted to say he was our B.C. Derby horse as that's the kiss of death, but Richard stuck with him.'
