Nice Lady set for $63,500 Allowance at Woodbine
Today at Woodbine Racecourse in Toronto, Canada, racing fans can look forward to an 8-race card including a $63,500 Allowance for Ontario-sired fillies and mares three years old and upward that have never won three races.
To be run over 6 1/2 furlongs, the Allowance has attracted eight runners including Nice Lady, a 4-year-old filly that has recently shown a penchant for shorter distances, and who despite being the fourth favorite, could make today's race her own.
Claimed in April this year for just $9,500 by her trainer Scott Fairlie, Nice Lady has paid off. In a non-winners-of-two Ontario-sired allowance earlier this year, the filly crossed the line first to earn her connections a none-too-shabby $35,820.
However, over 6 1/2 furlongs she has enjoyed varied success. In late Spring she came second in back-to-back two-turn races before finishing fourth in a 1 1/16 mile outing in July. And a week later she came close to winning a seven furlong outing.
Nice Lady has formed a pattern of just falling short of winning races, a pattern Fairlie will be looking to break in this afternoon's Allowance. But first she'll have to overcome some stiff competition in the form of 4-year-old filly and favourite, D' Country.
D' Country recently finished third to Selembao and Interregnum around two turns, runners that each did well in their subsequent starts. Second favourite Lady Elena has also showed some impressive turn of foot of late, coming third in an August 18 outing.
In terms of long shots, 12/1 Lucky n' Bold could be worth keeping an eye on. Despite the fact that she faded in her last outing in July and hasn't raced since, trainer John LeBlanc Jr. has reportedly given her five stringent works leading up to this race.
