On Sunday at Woodbine Racecourse in Toronto, Canada, racegoers were left open-mouthed when 65-1 long shot Miami Deco won the $500,000 Breeders' Stakes, the third and final leg of Canada's coveted Triple Crown.

As the last race in the Canadian Triple Crown, the 1 1/2 mile turf for three-year-old Canada-breds drew an impressive field of 13 runners including favourites Cognashene, Stormy Lord and Born to Act. But it is Miami Deco fans will remember.

From the start, Silent Wisper, the only filly in the race, snatched the lead and set quick fractions until the far turn, when she succumbed to Cognashene. Miami Deco, meanwhile, was not far from the back of the field leading up to this point.

But in the far turn, Miami Deco's jockey Richard Dos Ramos pulled the colt three wide before ducking inside the leaders in the mid stretch. And as the tension in the stands reached a fever pitch, Dos Ramos made his move in the late stages.

He asked Miami Deco for more and the thoroughbred answered with an injection of speed that saw him pass the leaders to cross the line first a comfortable 3/4 of length clear of Stormy Lord, who finished 2 1/4 lengths ahead of Cognashene.

Said Dos Ramos after the race, 'I stayed on the rail most of the way, until I needed some room to make a run. Then when I thought I had a shot to get out a little bit, to give my horse a shot to win the race, I started picking up horses quickly.'

But the most surprising aspect of the Miami Deco's victory was that the Breeders' Stakes was his first ever race on turf. As for trainer Brian Lynch, this was his second Triple Crown win this year, the first being the Wales Stakes with Golden Moka.
