Unpredictable World Cup Brings Hope to US Side
After several highly unpredictable World Cup matches this week, the feeling among the United States side is that 'anything is possible'.
Nothing happened as planned and sports betting sites were scrambling to change their odds as matches were being played out.
Defending World Cup champs, Italy, drew 1-1 with Paraguay - a totally unexpected result.
Brazil played blandly - certainly not at the level that is expected of a superpower - and only managed to beat North Korea 2-1 by a margin.
North Korea is ranked 105th in the world and even lacked the backing of a single fan (if you don't count the Chinese actors hired by the government to cheer the team on as the country's citizens are not allowed to travel).
But the most upsetting result this week was the Spain vs Switzerland match, where the European Champions lost 1-0.
"It's the biggest shock in the World Cup so far and punters have taken a right kick in the cojones with that loss today," said Paddy Power. "But there's a long way to go yet and Spain are still in the hunt - at least for now."
While odds on the US side remain at 80/1 for now, things may very well change.
Switzerland, for example, saw its odds swing from 200/1 before its game with Spain to 125/1 afterwards.
For now, Brazil remains the favourite to win the tournament at 9/2, followed by Spain (5/1) and Argentina (11/2).
Hosts, South Africa, saw their chances slip to 500/1.
