Reading about Canadian lottery wins is always heartwarming, but a recent Lotto 6/49 jackpot payout was particularly touching.

The $1 million win went to Russell Brown, a lung recipient, who has a lot to be thankful for in life.

Not only can Brown celebrate nearly 50 years of marriage and good health thanks to the lung transplant, but he is now $1 million richer thanks to the Lotto 6/49 Canadian lottery win.

Brown bought the $4 Lotto 6/49 ticket at Sobeys, Edmonton and after the draw, used the ticket checker at the store to reveal the win.

Disbelief Over Lotto 6/49 Jackpot Win

Brown said that after checking the ticket, he machine didn't display quickly enough and his first thought was "Oh no, I broke it."

Recalling the moment, the winner stated: "Then it said, 'Appears to be a $1,000,000 winner.' I walked away and thought to myself, 'Calm down and use your head.' So I got a pen and wrote my name on the ticket."

Brown then did what he had come to the store for in the first place: He grabbed some groceries, and then, just to make sure, went back to check the ticket one more time.

"I went home and told my wife, but she didn't believe me," he said, of his spouse, Sheila who has shared his life for over five decades.

"To me, this is the second time we've won," said Sheila. "If we hadn't won the donor lottery the first time, we couldn't have won this time."

Free Play Ticket Leads to Lottery Win

Another Lotto 6/49 story doing the rounds in the local Canadian media tells the tale of the Young, Sask. couple who won $1 million by cashing the free play on their Lotto 6/49 ticket in return for a ticket.

Marlene and Melvin Dieno  bought a ticket on April 13th and a week after the draw, checked the ticket at the local Co-op.

"I scanned one ticket that won a free ticket, and then I check this one and I thought the machine was broken because it said I won a whole bunch of money," said Marlene.

A clerk quickly confirmed Marlene Dieno's greatest wish: To win the lottery and take home a cool one million bucks.

"I was in shock," said Marlene, "kind of numb. It's not every day you get told you've won a million dollars."

Melvin recalled that after his wife got home with the lucky ticket and showed it to him, he had to look at it several times to be sure.

"It's unreal," he said. "This doesn't happen very often in a small time. I always hoped that if we won, we'd be at an age where we could enjoy it and help the kids."

The couple plan to build a new home, buy new cars, help their family and save the rest for retirement.
