Canada Women's Basketball Team has entered the brackets stage of the 2012 London Olympics. The crucial game was against Brazil, in which they registered a surprise 79-73 win to grab the last qualifying spot from their group. Technically their medal hopes are still alive in the 2012 Olympics Women's Basketball event, but this would be a practical impossibility.

Because Canada has finished fourth in Group B, they will play the Group A leaders USA in the quarter final match on Tuesday August 7 at 14:00 hours London time.

It will take much more than a miracle for the Canadian women hoopsters to win this game and no one back home is expecting them to do so. But the Olympics are also about how you play and Canada will be taking plenty of positives from their win over Brazil.

The last time Canada played Brazil it faced annihilation. To erase that memory and hold to o a win in a closely contested game demonstrates strength of character, which can do wonders for the future.

After the win over Brazil, Canadian player Shona Thorburn thanked friends and family for their support, but said, "? nobody really expected us to be going to the quarter finals. I think this could do great things for basketball in Canada and team sports in general."

Online Betting Odds For Olympics Women's Basketball

Ladbrokes is one of the few online betting sites that have covered the Women's Basketball event in the London Olympics. Ladbrokes online has posted odds for the outright winner for all the eight teams that have made it to the brackets stage. Canada has been given odds of 1000/1. One of the reasons is that Canada is playing the favourites upfront.

USA occupies the other extreme with odds of 1/12. The team has not lost in the group stage since Women's Basketball was first introduced as an Olympic sport. But upsets can happen and two teams are being named as the proverbial dark horses.

The first is Australia, which has been given odds of 10/1. Australia was second in Group B and should meet USA in the semi finals. Two seasons ago at the FIBA World Championships Australia went down fighting to the USA and will be hungry for revenge.

France is the Group B topper, but has odds of 12/1 at Ladbrokes online to win the 2012 Olympics Women's Basketball. Realistically it should win the silver medal to USA's gold.

The odds at Ladbrokes online for the remaining teams are as follows.

Russia 15/1

China 50/1

Turkey 60/1

Czech Republic 200/1
