The Atlantic Lottery Corporation (ALC) is offering players the opportunity to play GeoSweep, a new lottery style game which has a $250,000 daily top prize draw, and a $1,000 guaranteed daily winner.

Players essentially must find a place to own on the map, stake their claim and hope that their selected spot comes up in the daily draw.

GeoSweep, which was imported from the United Kingdom, is similar to most lotteries, except that instead of picking numbers, players need to go online and pick a location on the Atlantic Canada map.

There are 2.3 million locations (geos) on the map, and players purchase the right to own that location for 30 days (at a cost of $7.50 - or 25c a day).

Geos that are owned go into a daily draw, with a $1,000 prize up for grabs, while neighboring winning geos share a $500 prize.

Each day, all the geos, occupied or not, are entered into a draw, for a $250,000 prize.

GeoSweep Criticised by Opposition

The Atlantic Lottery Corporation's purchase of GeoSweep has resulted in criticism by the opposition party in the New Brunswick government, who feels that it was excessive to spend $4 million on the game which has a total cost of $8 million.

The New Brunswick and Prince Edward Island governments each paid $4 million towards the investment, while other Atlantic governments, ie. Nova Scotia and Newfoundland and Labrador governments did not invest.

The opposition claims that GeoSweep from ALC hasn't caught on enough to justify spending the millions, especially since the online game did not create jobs for New Brunswick residents.

In the United Kingdom, where the game originated, GeoSweep has failed to take off and in March this year, income in the whole country was around just $160 a day.

ALC Gives Back to the Community

The ALC, however, believes that it still early days to determine whether or not GeoSweep is a success, and in the meantime continues to create fun, regulated gambling products for its players - giving Canadians the opportunity to try out this new game.

The ALC returns every penny of its profits to the four provinces, as it has strived to do for over three decades, while money earned through games such as GeoSweep and others, are earmarked for social programs, roads and education - to name just a few.

Players can try their luck on weekly lotteries such as Lotto 649 and Lotto Max for the chance to win millions of dollars in jackpot prizes.
