On Tuesday at Parx Racing in Pennsylvania, 2-year-old Butch Reid-trained filly Alexandra Rylee won her third start from four races against three rivals in the $75,000 Brandywine Stakes.

Although she faltered last time out five weeks ago by finishing fourth as the race favourite, she made up for it this week with Frankie Pennington aboard, when she delivered a sterling display of speed and stamina.

Set to be contested over 6 furlongs for 2-year-old fillies, the scratching of Florida-bred Spring Jump reduced the Brandywine Stakes field to just four, but regardless Alexandra Rylee proved to be unbeatable.

For most of the race it came down to a duel between her and third favourite Doing Great, and the duo set some quick fractions of 22.51 and 45.35. However, nearing the line Pennington asked Alexandra for more.

She responded with a burst of speed that thrust her into the lead deep in the straight, which she maintained until she crossed the line first, finishing a notable 4 1/2-lengths ahead of favourite Coax Liberty in second.

Coax Liberty passed Doing Great in the final stages, who secured third place. As a 4/1 shot,  Alexandra Rylee covered the distance in 1:09.72, and returned $6.20 for betting fans smart enough to back her.

The daughter of Afleet Alex, Alexandra Rylee kicked off her career in August when she won her Saratoga debut, which she followed up in October with a victory in a first-level restricted allowance at this course.
