Monday's $153,072 Royal North Stakes (Gr 3) at Woodbine Racecourse in Toronto, Canada may have attracted predominantly Canadian racing fans, but the 6 furlong race itself was won by Californian-bred 4-year-old filly Unzip Me.

Six fillies and mares 3-years-old and up entered the starting gate of the Royal North Stakes, including race favourite Unzip Me, who had top-rated U.S. jockey Joe Talamo aboard, Irish-bred filly Minute Limit and New York-bred filly Mother Russia.

But from the start, racing fans could see that it was no coincidence that Unzip Me started the race as the favourite as Talamo kept her tightly in check behind pacesetter Mother Russia, until in the stretch he asked her for more and she promptly answered.

Unzip Me sped up until she swept past Mother Russia into the lead, which she maintained until she crossed the line first, to both the delight and dismay of Woodbine betting fans. Mother Russia was second and Ontario-bred Mullins Beach was third.

Said a visibly pleased Talamo after the race, 'I know in all of Unzip Me's races she's on the lead, but she definitely doesn't need to be. She did all the work down the lane. She was incredible and she's got a really good kick in her. There was plenty left.'

The Royal North Stakes was Unzip Me's fourth stakes win this season. Her other wins came in the Irish O'Brien Stakes at Santa Anita Park, the Las Cienegas Handicap (Gr 3) at Santa Anita Park and the Great Lady M. Stakes at Hollywood Park.

In her most recent outing before the Royal North Stakes, she finished third in the Robert K. Kerlan Memorial Handicap at Hollywood Park. Despite making her racing debut on dirt, Unzip Me has proved to be a talented and speedy turf specialist.
