More than a week after the British Columbia Lottery Corporation had to shut down its brand new online casino, PlayNow.com, following a security glitch, the government has refused to commit to a re-opening date for the site.

PlayNow.com crashed after only a few hours of operation, with lottery corporation blaming too many players for the system to support.

However, the corporation soon admitted that it was a technical glitch that allowed several new members to wager using other players' credit cards, which caused them to shut down the site temporarily.

The Housing and Social Development Minister, Rich Coleman would not give a date on when he believed the problem would be fixed.

He said that a third party was conducting an evaluation to make sure that security breaches would not be repeated when the site reopens.

When asked how much this type of delay was costing British Columbia, Coleman said: "Oh, not a lot because it wasn't expected to be a huge revenue generator in the first couple days anyway."

"Frankly, it doesn't matter what the cost is," he added. "We had an issue with the technical side of it and it needs to be fixed.

The government has purchased two additional servers to handle the increased traffic expected on the new site.

"We will make sure that the third party review is complete and that the information and privacy commissioner is satisfied with it," added Coleman.
