On Saturday horse racing fans at Woodbine Racecourse in Toronto, Canada were blown away by 4-year-old colt Southdale, who came alive mid-stretch to win the prestigious $176,500 Eclipse Stakes (Gr 3) over 1 1/16 miles.

Southdale, the son of respected runner Street Cry, started the race under Emma-Jayne Wilson, who kept him comfortably just off the pace for most of the race. However, in the middle of the stretch she ask him for more and he responded.

The colt snatched the lead from pacesetter and race favourite, Fatal Bullet, and looked home free until 10/1 shot Stunning Stag launched an impressive challenge in the latter stages. But Southdale held on to cross the line first, 3/4 of a length clear.

Stunning Stag grabbed second while Fatal Bullet held on for third. The win was Southdale's second this season from two starts, his first victory of the year in an allowance at Woodbine over six furlongs in May. He has won 3 out 5 career races.

Southdale's trainer Ian Black was happy at the result as was the colt's owner/breeder Rod Ferguson. The decision by Southdale's connections to race him lightly has turned out well as he has 3 wins, 1 second and 1 third place to his name.

The colt completed the Eclipse Stakes over Woodbine's polytrack in a time of 1:43.77. He is out of renowned Saint Ballado mare, Pinafores Pride. So far Southdale has earned a none-too-shabby $209,762 and may just be getting started.
