Open to Ontario sired three-year-olds and up that have never won three races, the $63,500 allowance will be contested by seven runners over 6 furlongs. And judging by his Beyer Speed rating, Gypsy Ring will be the horse to beat.
A four-year-old gelding, Gypsy Ring had a respectable campaign in 2009 for owner-trainer Paul Buttigieg, the highlight of which was a close second to Costalivin in the restricted $125,000 Deputy Minister Stakes at Woodbine.
After two more shots at allowances for Ontario-sired thoroughbreds last year, Buttigieg gave Gypsy Ring a 7-month layoff. And returning in a 5-furlong allowance in April, the gelding managed another close second, this time to Bob's Ring.
Most recently Gypsy Ring showed that he can win races by storming home first in a 5 1/2 furlong allowance, earning himself his second consecutive 80-plus Beyer Speed rating. As such, he should be well-backed in today's allowance.
Gypsy Ring's regular rider Emma Wilson will be aboard today. But despite riding the favourite, she'll have to dispatch second favourite D's Legend Storm, who won his debut in October and then snatched third in November's Frost King Stakes.
Another threat is Race for Gold, a 3-year-old who was unbeaten in two starts aged 2. In his most recent race this year, he finished in third place, a not-too-shabby result considering he went up against older and more experienced rivals.
Here is the complete field and odds for Wednesday's $63,500 allowance at Woodbine Racecourse:
1 Race for Gold (ON) 5/2
2 Gypsy Ring (ON) 9/5
3 D's Legend Storm (ON) 2/1
4 Win and Reign (ON) 6/1
5 D'wild Man (ON) 20/1
6 Private Meeting (ON) 15/1
7 Gas N Dash (ON) 20/1
