When confronted by the 16 NFL lines for a given weekend of furious American football betting action, how is one not overwhelmed? Is there a way to find value in certain NFL spreads, and to realize and acknowledge that other NFL lines have been priced up with shrewd exactitude and thus do not warrant a wager? There is a way to make sense of point spreads, and every NFL handicapper or professional gambler worth his salt will have the same tool at their disposal, namely an NFL Power Rankings chart.

NFL Handicapping - Not Rocket Science

The good news is that you can pay a professional NFL handicapper to help you find NFL betting value. The better news is that with a little bit of research and weekly homework you can start to build your own power ratings and ultimately end up with customized NFL power rankings that will make you the envy of every casual fan and sports bettor.

NFL Power Rankings seek to rate the best team in the league all the way down to the 32nd and worst team. Your NFL power rankings chart will probably not be identical to the next persons, nor should it be. Ranking the week to week performance of every NFL team is not an exact science, but it will give you a critical edge when it comes to evaluating NFL lines.

Power Rankings And Point Spread

The NFL points spread is not based on the objective ability of the two competing teams. Odds makers must take into account the fact that some teams (Cowboys, Patriots, Colts) are darlings of the public, and will therefore always attract a lot of money regardless of the line. With this in mind the bookies can inflate the spread for popular teams, often creating betting value for their less heralded opponents.

The NFL team that is the defending Super Bowl champion usually begins the season at the top of the Power Rankings, but this is a fallacy as champions nearly always bounce back hard with disappointing campaigns as they attempt to defend their title. If you have your own Power Rankings you can weigh up each team based on the merits of previous performances, and not be blinded by inane facts such as Brett Favre is one team's quarterback and hence they have to be favored to win.

NFL Power Rankings should be tailored specifically to betting performance, so which teams are covering ATS and being consistently undervalued in the NFL betting lines is far more meaningful than which team ESPN considers to be the best in the league. Look at teams with positive turnover margins, teams that win the total yardage battle in prior games, and teams that have a high number of covers against the points spread. These are the teams that should gravitate towards the head of your Power Rankings class. By the end of the regular season you will have a powerful handicapping tool at your disposal to build up a serious betting bankroll!
