Teen Mom Wins $7m Canadian Lottery Jackpot
New Brunswick is home to the latest Canadian lottery winner, after a teenage mom, Kelsie Hodgin hit the jackpot on the May 21st Lotto 6/49 draw.
19 year old Hodgin, a sales representative with Bell Aliant, is currently on maternity leave after giving birth to her daughter just five months ago.
While house-hunting with her boyfriend last week with plans to move out his parents' home, Hodgin purchased a lottery ticket at a Sussex gas station on a whim.
On Thursday morning she received a text message from her boyfriend to say that someone who had bought a ticket in Sussex had won the $7 million Lotto 6/49 jackpot.
From that moment, Hodgin's life changed.
Winner Still Shocked over Lotto 6/49 Jackpot
Recalling the moments when she thought she may have won the lottery, Hodgin said:
"I jumped out of bed, grabbed the ticket, and got online to check the numbers."
"We had purchased our ticket in Sussex. What I saw on the screen were numbers that matched my ticket but I didn't quite believe it, so I did what I always do; I called my mom, and she checked them for me."
After her mom confirmed that the numbers matched, the pair headed to store to have their win confirmed.
"I am shocked and I still haven't, don't think, fully processed it yet because its a huge deal," said the teen after picking up her cheque in Moncton this weekend.
Hodgin said that she rarely buys lottery tickets as she always believed that she was never going to win. "Then I buy a ticket and it turns out I'm the winner!" she said in disbelief.
Plans for Lotto 6/49 Win
The $7 million Lotto 6/49 jackpot win will help fast-track the young couple's plans to move into their new home.
After winning the lottery, Hodgin and her partner plan to build a new house and pay off their car.
"Beyond that I would like to take a trip somewhere, but I have no idea where," said the winner.
"This is all just sinking in. I mean I have dreamed about winning, but now that I have, I am a little overwhelmed."
Her biggest joy, however, is that her 5 month old, Payton, will have a great future. "I'm excited for her when she grows up that she's going to know she's going to do really well," said the happy lottery winner mom.
