Saturday sees the end of the thoroughbred racing's Triple Crown season, when the Belmont Stakes is run in Belmont Park, New York. The 145th running of the Belmont Stakes once again sees no Triple Crown champion, as has been the case for the past 35 years. It was the legendary horse, Affirmed, who was the last beast to win the Triple Crown in 1978 and make world records.

Breaking Positions Set for Belmont Stakes Race

There were a total of 14 horses which took the field on Wednesday in preparation for Saturday's Belmont Stakes run. Headed by Kentucky Derby winner Orb, Preakness winner Oxbow was also in line. In addition there were also a total of five horses trained by Todd Pletcher.

Orb was made the 3-1 favorite and will set off from post 5, just as his trainer wanted. "I just didn't want to get down on the inside where maybe we might get stuck around the first turn, like we sort of did in the Preakness," said trainer Shug McGaughey. He said that he had wanted to draw in the middle and that's what he got.

The Preakness Stakes winner, Oxbow, will break from post 7 and was given odds of 5-1. Oxbow's trainer, D. Wayne Lukas, said that he thought post positions were too overanalyzed. He said that with the race being a mile and a half long with sweeping turns, the break positions hold less significance. "I am more concerned about who is around me and what they're going to do than what gate we got," he said.

Revolutionary, who finished third place in the Derby and did not make it to the Preakness, is 9-2 second choice. He has been set to break from the ninth post.
