Fans of golf are eagerly awaiting the start of the 2012 British Open next week Thursday (July 19) at the Royal Lytham & St. Annes Golf Club in Lytham St. Annes, Lancashire, England, particularly because Tiger Woods has been posted as the early betting favorite.

After two forgettable years on the professional golfing circuit following a personal scandal which destroyed his marriage and tarnished his image for many of his fans, Tiger Woods may well be emerging from his slump, and ready to win his first major since 2009.

Tiger has Won Three Tournaments in 2012

Somehow Woods has managed to pull himself together in 2012, and thus far has won three tournaments in so many months, which are the Arnold Palmer Invitational in March, the Memorial Tournament in June and most recently the AT&T National in early July.

As a result, oddsmakers seem confident that Woods is on track to recapture the winning form that just a few short years ago made him virtually unstoppable. The former world # 1 one appears to have dealt with the psychological trauma that his philandering caused him and those around him, as well as overcome his knee problems - for now.

It's no secret that Woods has been beset with serious knee problems for some time, despite just being 36. Over the last few years he has consulted with the world's best orthopedic surgeons and undergone four operations. But whether they managed to fix the problem for good remains to be seen.

Have Tiger's Knee Issues Been Solved?

It was not lost on fans of the American that he withdrew from the Players Champion?ship in mid-May after just nine holes because of knee issues. Or how he withdrew from the US Masters in April, reportedly for the same reason. But he has chalked up victories since then, so obviously the surgeries have helped.

Of course, Woods - who is now the # 4 ranked player in the world thanks to his recent tournament wins - will have his work cut out for him next week as he goes up a talented field, all just as eager to win a major as he is.

Although Woods is the 2012 British Open betting favorite at Canadian-friendly William Hill, hot on his heels is Lee Westwood (England) with 12/1 odds, Padraig Harrington (Ireland) with 16/1 odds, Rory McIlroy (Northern Ireland) with 16/1 odds and world # 1, Luke Donald (England), with 18/1 odds.
