Patriots to Face Giants for Super Bowl Supremacy
And then there were two. After the hard-fought NFL Championship games on the weekend, the teams that will face off for the Vince Lombardi trophy in Super Bowl XLVI in two weeks time, are the New England Patriots vs the New York Giants.
What makes this such a serendipitous matchup, is the fact these two teams last met in the 2008 Super Bowl where the Giants beat out the Patriots 17-14. As such, the Patriots will see this year's Super Bowl as the ideal opportunity to exact their revenge from that humiliating defeat four years ago.
Also, both teams still boast the same quarterbacks who went to battle four years ago in the form of Eli Manning for the Giants, and Tom Brady for the Patriots. It will be very interesting to see what these talented veterans bring to the party on Sunday, February 5 at Lucas Oil Field in Indianapolis.
Patriots and Giants Make it to Super Bowl XLVI
But what was also interesting is how the Patriots and Giants made it through to the Super Bowl. Both teams beat their respective rivals by just three points, the Giants securing their 20-17 win over the San Francisco 49ers in overtime, and the Patriots their 23-20 win over the Baltimore Ravens.
While both of these mighty NFL franchises deserve to be where they are, NFL oddsmakers have the New England Patriots as the -3.5 point favorites ahead of their Super Bowl matchup. But judging by how many of the NFL betting favorites have fared in the playoffs, there's no doubt anything could happen in Indianapolis.
The Patriots will be playing their fifth Super Bowl in 11 seasons, so they have as much 'big match play' temperament as any team in the league. However, NFL fans will recall how the Patriots were favored - by a whopping 12 points - over the Giants in their last Super Bowl showdown, and proceeded to let the glory slip through their fingers 12-7.
As such, Brady must bring his A-game to Indianapolis which for some strange reason he failed to do on the weekend. Highly unusual for him, he only threw for 239 yards with two INTs and - for the first time in 36 games - did not make a single TD pass. Luckily New England's defense stepped up, who surprisingly excelled down the stretch.
