Fisherman Enjoys Amazing $7.2 Million Lottery Catch
Van Hen Lu has been working as a fisherman in Richmond for many years, but this week, he hauled in his biggest catch ever.
Lu and his wife Thieu May Ly hit the $7.2 million Lotto 6/49 jackpot and became multi millionaires overnight.
The draw on Wednesday resulted in the superb win for this coupe who have been residents of Canada for just over 30 years.
To help them celebrate were their three children, the oldest who celebrated his 27th birthday on the day of the win. Lu said that the news of their windfall came on a very appropriate day.
The 58 year old said that he was beside himself with joy and would use the money wisely, first to purchase a new home for his family and then to buy a new motor for his salmon boat. He said that he had no intention of giving up work as he "didn't want to stay at home."
The lucky ticket was purchased at a Richmond Petro-Canada and they couple checked it on Friday morning. As soon as they realized that they were winners, the started dancing from joy and immediately called their two daughters.
Children Share in Lottery Win
Their daughter, Ana was skeptical at first when her mother called with the good news.
"I said, 'Stop joking - it's not funny'," she said. She was only convinced when she checked the ticket herself. Her 18 year old sister, Diane was also over the moon.
The sisters are both bound to wheelchairs because of a neuro-muscular disorder, a fact which has not kept them from taking part in competitive sport. The two are heading to Paris in a fortnight to represent Team Canada in powerchair soccer.
Asked what she intends spending the money on, Ana said: "I just want to be happy. I hope things continue to stay the same."
Their father said that he has been playing the same six numbers for many years and they were simply random numbers which popped into his head the first time they were played.
His is the second multi million dollar win from the Richmond area since the start of the month. Another $7 million lottery ticket remains unclaimed.
