The consulting group, H2 Gambling Capital recently released its list of the top ten gambling nations in the world.

Many were surprised to see that Canada not only appeared on the list, but actually appeared quite high.

The country reached number four on the list of countries where its citizens gamble - and lose - the most per capita.

These rankings, which were compiled for 2010, are calculated using a nation's average gaming losses, divided by the adult population.

The gaming losses are calculated as the amount bet but never recovered over a period of a year.   The calculations include money that is lost on all forms of wagering, including lotteries, casinos, poker machines, online gambling and horse racing.

The top gambling country is Australia, where the losses per adult were calculated as $1,288 on a yearly basis.  Canada's annual loss per adult is a lower $568 per adult.

Interestingly, the United States, home to gambling cities such as Atlantic City and Las Vegas, didn't even make the list at all.
