The Western Canada Lottery Corporation was starting to despair that the winner of over one million dollars on a Western 649 lottery ticket purchased last year, was never going to step forward and claim the prize.

However, Beth Saunders of Penhold came forward in the nick of time to take home $1,006,750.00 - several days before it may have been too late.

Saunders bought an eight number Quick Pick combo package last year for $28, which gave her 56 quick picks.

She found out that she was the winner on February 6th, 2010 and had one year to claim her prize.

Last month, she decided that she had better make her claim if she was going to take home the money, and contacted Western Canada Lottery Corporation.

When asked why it took her so long to come forward, Saunders said: "A million dollars is a lot of money and I didn't want my life to change."

"I don't want people to treat me differently and I don't want to treat people differently. I want to keep grounded."

She recalled the moment when she found out that she had won $1 million after matching six numbers on the form.

"All six numbers matched. I'm like most people - I couldn't believe it at first. There was shock for a couple of months. A happy kind of shock."

Besides taking home $1 million for matching six numbers, Saunders also won a further $6,750 because she had purchased the eight number combination package.
