Sunrise Smarty Set to Glow in Aqueduct Allowance
Tomorrow (Thursday, February 10) at Aqueduct Racecourse in New York, four-year-old colt Sunrise Smarty will start as the overwhelming favorite in the day's feature, a $44,000 first-level allowance sprint over six furlongs.
A sharp four-year-old colt trained by Michael Hushion, Sunrise Smarty is expected excel against five other four-year-olds and up that have never won a race other than maiden, claiming, starter, or restricted or that have never won two races.
Oddsmakers have set Sunrise Smarty as the favorite in the field of six sprinters based on his superb victory in a maiden race in the recent fall meet at Belmont Park, where he led the race from start to finish, showing off his speed and stamina.
Based on that performance, Hushion entered Sunrise Smarty in the following month's Groovy Overnight Stakes, where he was runner-up to Rule by Night. And in his first trip at this level, a $47,000 allowance at Aqueduct, he finished fourth.
Since then, Sunrise Smarty has delivered three cracking workouts, crowned by a quick half-mile trip in late January where he came tops out of 54 runners. Hence why he should be the horse to beat tomorrow, with Ramon Dominguez aboard.
But first he'll have to beat, amongst others, Dahlgren Chapel, who'll run against open company for the first time since his third in the Tyro Stakes, and Fastus Cactus, who showed plenty of early speed in the Toboggan Stakes (Gr 3) last time out.
Here is the complete field and odds for the $44,000 first-level allowance over six furlongs at Aqueduct on Thursday:
- Chapel (NY) 7/2
- Eltish Star (FL) 4/1
- Fastus Cactus (FL) 4/1
- Sunrise Smarty (KY) 7/5
- Six Flings (NY) 8/1
- Never Content (KY) 15/1
