Alberta is running a Responsible Gambling Awareness Week from today, October 18 until October 24.

The objective of this week is show gamblers how to wager responsibly and also to make them aware about the different responsible gambling programs available across the province.

Campaigns will be run at bingo halls, VLT retail outlets, casinos and racing centers in the province.

Open houses will be held in a number of these locations, with representatives of the Alberta Gaming and Liquor Commission providing information and advice.

These will open on October 19th and will remain open until midnight.

The Minister of Public Security for the Alberta Gaming and Liquor Commission, Frank Oberle said: "This government is committed to providing Albertans with information about responsible gambling."

"The goal of the week is to create awareness for the many responsible gambling programs available across the province, as well as to let gamblers know where they can find help if they need it," he added.

The week will also highlight several industry training programs that the commission currently offers, including Reel Facts and Deal us In.

The Responsible Gambling Awareness Week is being supported by a number of other entities, including the Alberta Charitable Casino Operators, Bingo Alberta and Alberta Health Services.

The province recently shelved a thick report on the future of charitable gambling in Alberta, which recommended a major redistribution of the $200 million in charity funds brought in each year by hosting casinos.
