It was celebrations all around for two young men in their twenties who had an extremely lucky run at Casino Regina in Saskatchewan this weekend.

The two shared a prize of almost $1 million after playing the Monte Carlo slot machine - and won the largest amount ever paid out on a standalone slot game in the history of Canadian gambling.

The story began when the two, Jesse and Brandon, decided to try their luck at Casino Regina over the weekend.

They weren't doing too well at the roulette tables, and decided to take a break from gaming and return that same evening.

When they returned, they realized that the Monte Carlo slot machine was vacant, after being occupied for most of the night by someone else.

They made a bee-line for one of their favourite slot games, which they always try to play when they are at the casino.

After a couple of spins, the two played a $40 spin and it was then that it happened - they hit the $913,940 jackpot!

Brandon, who declined, like Jesse, to give his surname, said about the win: "I was extremely shocked. I didn't say too much for the entire night. I was up until about 5 am just sitting there."

The two will split the prize, each taking home a life-changing amount of money.

A spokesman for the Saskatchewan Gaming Commission, Gerry Fischer, confirmed that this was one of the biggest stand alone progressive jackpots every paid out in Canada on a single machine.

Casino Regina opened up again recently after its workers had been on a strike that lasted several months.
