Profits Down for Nova Scotia Gaming

The Nova Scotia Gaming Corporation (NSGC) has released its 200-10 Annual Report.

The reports examines how it achieved its business results, balancing economic and social mandates for the organisation.

The financial aspect of the report shows that in 2009-10 compared to 2008-9, gaming profits were down by four percent.

Marie Mullally, President and CEO of NSGC said: "We expected and planned for these declines. Last year many of the lottery products were in the mature phase of their life cycle and we also experienced less casino traffic. To offset some of these trends, we have made improvements to the casino properties and introduced new lottery games."

The NSGC is proud to work closely with the charitable sector and provided $3.7 million in funding to its Support4Sport program.

Mullally commented that the "gaming industry has historical roots in supporting charities and communities, and that support has not wavered. NSGC's commitment to social responsibility guides us in our planning and decision-making and that benefits all Nova Scotians."

All profits for the gaming industry are directed back to Nova Scotia communities which support government services and programme's.

The industry also provides in the region of 660 direct jobs for Nova Scotia and it supports approximately 1,485 retail establishments, many of which include small businesses in the rural areas of Nova Scotia.

In addition, the NSGC paid in excess of $41 million in commission to business owners. The Gaming Corporation also invested $7.8 million during 2009-10 towards responsible gaming, treatment and education.

The report indicated a $145.9 million payment to province, youth prevention programme initiatives, the roll out of the My-Play system and the development of Responsible Gambling Retailer training programme's.
