Last year two female runners captured the imagination of horse racing fans, 2009 Horse of the Year Rachel Alexandra, and Horse of the Year runner-up, Zenyatta, and next week Rachel could return to Churchill Downs in Kentucky.

According to the 4-year-old's majority owner Jess Jackson, Rachel Alexandra will start on Saturday, June 12 in either the Stephen Foster Handicap (Gr 3) or the Fleur de Lis Handicap (Gr 2), both of which are contested over 1 1/8 miles.

Fans of the champion filly will be eager to see if she can regain her winning ways after losing both her outings earlier this year, and in so doing shattering her unbeaten record. In her favour is the fact that Churchill Downs is her regular training track.

But if her connections, including her trainer Steve Asmussen, decide not to race her at Churchill Downs, they have a backup plan in the form of the Ogden Phipps Handicap (Gr 1) at Belmont Park or the Obeah Stakes (GR 3) at Delaware Park.

Said Jackson, 'We were impressed with Rachel's Memorial Day work, breezing six furlongs in 1:11.20 and galloping out a mile in 1:38. We are getting her back to her fitness level of last year to hopefully race her in the Breeders' Cup this fall.'

If Rachel's connections enter her in the prestigious Stephen Foster Handicap, she'll have to overcome a field of top females and males. However, if they run her in the Fleur de Lis Handicap, which is restricted to females, she'll likely start as the favourite.
