When I read online recently that Microgaming, arguably the world's best online gambling software vendor, will shortly be releasing Lord of the Rings slots, I thought I'd died and gone to heaven.
But let me start at the beginning. Ever since the morning of my 12th birthday, when I woke up to discover as one of presents J.R.R. Tolkein's cult classic Lord of the Rings, my love for hairy Hobbits, wise wizards and ghastly goblins was born. And while admittedly it took me probably more than ten years and four attempts to get through the Middle Earth fantasy, when I finally did, all I hoped was that Hollywood would sooner or later turn the Lord of the Rings into a series of magical movies. And it took about another 10 years before my wish was finally granted, and soon after my DVD collection magically increased by one box set.
But, in between my love for Lord of the Rings, my love for online gambling also grew, particularly for online slots games and themed ones at that. There's not a single Marvel comics-inspired video slot game or movie-inspired slot that I have not indulged in, X-Men slots and Tomb Raider slots (featuring the salacious Lara Croft) being just two of my favourites. So imagine my delight when I found out that in just a matter of weeks I'll be able to enjoy Lord of the Rings slots at all Microgaming casinos! I was almost tempted to shout out the good news from the rooftops. Almost. So eager to find out what I was in store for, I managed to find out more about the great game, which is expected to be the first of three Lord of the Ring slot games, just like the book and movies.
Just like the original story, slot fans will be able to follow the adventures of Frodo, Gandalf, Gimli, Aragon, Legolas and plenty of other Lord of the Rings characters in their quest to prevent the Dark Lord from getting his evil clutches on the all-powerful ring. And in this vein, actual clips from the The Fellowship of the Ring movie will be included in the game to complement all the lucrative and exciting features that Microgaming slots have become so famous for. For instance, the Lord of the Ring slots boasts a special Eye of Sauron symbol which expands to cover the entire reel to turn it into one magical Wild symbol that can conjure up heaps of winning combinations.
The Ring itself is the game's scatter symbol, and when three of these land anywhere across your reels, the game's Free Spins Feature is activated which can also result in huge payouts. But here's what blew my mind about the Lord of the Ring slots - its maximum coin jackpot is a whopping 1,900,000 coins! Now if that doesn't wet your appetite about arguably the most highly anticipated online video slots game of the year, I don't know what will.
