Though many golf fans hoped Tiger Woods would win his first major in many years at last month's 2012 US Masters in Augusta, it wasn't to be. But there are still three majors and many other top events for Tiger to win this year, including the Players Championship, which starts on Thursday in Ponte Vedra Beach, Florida, at the at TPC at Sawgrass.

The Players Championship $9.5m Prize Pool

This well-known stroke play PGA event is not only renowned for its beautiful setting and high caliber players it attracts, but for being the most lucrative golf tournament on the planet with its huge $9.5 million prize pool. And when the news broke that Tiger had signed on to play in the Players Championship this year, his Florida fans were thrilled.

Interestingly, Tiger has only won this tournament once, which was way back in 2001. Whether he'll use this year's Players Championship to showcase his winning form of a few years ago, will be revealed this week. But whatever happens, golf fans should be in for a real treat, especially considering some of the other players Tiger will be up against.

This includes defending champ, Matt Kuchar, who won this tournament last year with -13. If he brings his A-game this week and racks up a win, he'll become the first player in the Championship's 39-year history to pull off a consecutive victory. Other top contenders include Rory McIlroy, Phil Mickelson, Brandt Snedeker and Graeme McDowell.

2013 Players Championship Field a Global One

In fact, the 2013 Players Championship will boast a field comprising 145 of the world's best golfers, with particularly large contingents from Australia (17), South Africa (8), England (8) and Sweden (6). Top ranked players from these countries include 2013 US Masters winner Adam Scott, Aaron Baddeley, Tim Clark, Lee Westwood and Henrik Stenson.

While no doubt Aussie Adam Scott will be very well-backed in this tournament considering his recent US Masters win, so will Tiger Woods, Matt Kuchar, Rory McIlory and Phil Mickelson, who will be eager for another PGA victory this year after winning the Waste Management Phoenix Open in March, netting himself the top prize of $1,116,000.
