After knocking defending Wimbledon Ladies Single Champion Maria Sharapova out of the prestigious tennis tournament 6-4 6-3 on Monday, Germany's Sabine Lisicki's odds of winning Wimbledon jumped to 7/1, or the sixth favorite.

Fans lucky enough to have tickets to watch yesterday's match between 25-year-old Sharapova of Russia and 22-year-old Lisicki watched opened mouth as the latter ran rings around the former, and overwhelming betting favorite, ending any all speculation that Sharapova would be present on center court on Saturday to defend her coveted title.

Lisicki Got Revenge on Reigning Wimbledon Champ

The top seed was simply no match for Lisicki, who must have been overjoyed at exacting her revenge over the top-rated Russian. It would not have been lost on her, or Wimbledon 2012 betting fans, how this time last year Sharapova destroyed Lisicki in a semi-final match en route to winning the most prestigious tennis tournament in the world.

Any dreams Sharapova may have had of winning Wimbledon for the second consecutive time have dissolved, and with her out of the tournament fans will now be looking to the new betting favorite, Serena Williams, the 30-year-old American who has won Wimbledon an impressive four times, and will be looking for her fifth this year.

Interestingly, even though she was taken out by the 14th seed, Sharapova was extremely gracious in defeat and even sang the praises of Lisicki. Said Sharapova in her post-game interview: 'Lisicki, the 14th seed, gained revenge for her semi-final defeat at the hands of the Russian 12 months ago and Sharapova admitted she was powerless to prevent the hammering.

Sharapova Sings Lisicki's Praises Post Defeat

She said: 'I had chances and didn't take them. But a lot of the credit goes to my opponent. Sabine played extremely well and did many things better than I did. She has always had the potential and she did really well last year getting to the semi-finals.You have to hand it to her.

'Her serve is a big part of her game. It helps here and she used it extremely well. If she serves as well as she did today, and is as aggressive, there's no doubt she can go all the way here. And although I haven't really followed her results too much, if she plays like this then she belongs at the top,' she said.
