As one of the four tennis grand slams and the only one played on clay, the 2012 French Open kicked off at Roland-Garros in Paris yesterday, where the world's best tennis players are expected to strut their stuff. And already there have been some surprising results.

For instance, 26-seeded Andy Roddick of the USA, crashed out in the very first round to local player Nicolas Mahut 6-3, 6-3, 4-6, 6-2. It was Roddick's first first-round defeat in a grand slam event since 2007, and one which came as a big disappointment to betting fans who backed him to win the event.

Roddick's Surprise Loss Was His Own Fault

While many players may have come out with a barrage of excuses for a loss like that, Roddick told it like it was to reporters in his post-match interview, admitting that he 'moved horrendously out there.'

Another player to be surprisingly dispatched on Sunday was 30-seeded J? Melzer, who succumbed to relative German unknown Michael Berrer 6-7, 6-4, 2-6, 2-6, 3-6. Amazingly, Berrer overcame a two-set deficit en route to a well-deserved albeit surprising victory.

In terms of other results from the first day of the 2012 French Open, Australia's 6-seeded Samantha Stosur beat Britain's Elena Baltacha 6-4, 6-0, France's 5-seeded Jo-Wilfried Tsonga beat Russia's Andrey Kuznetsov 1-6, 6-3, 6-2, 6-4, and Serbia's 13-seeded Ana Ivanovic beat Spain's Lara Arruabarrena Vecino 6-1, 6-1.
