NHL betting fans have three games to look forward to this evening - Montreal Canadiens vs Carolina Hurricanes, Washington Capitals vs San Jose Sharks and Vancouver Canucks vs Phoenix Coyotes. However, the first game is the one we think should be the biggest humdinger.

Tonight the Carolina Hurricanes are on the road when they face off against the Montreal Canadiens at the Bell Centre, and although most sportsbooks - including top online betting site Bodog - have laid the home team as the betting favorites, the Hurricanes could end up surprising everyone.

At Bodog, the Canadiens will start as the +110 favorites versus the Hurricanes at +200

This may because Carolina bring a none-too-shabby 23-24-9 record with them, as well as a 12th place in the NHL Power Rankings, while their hosts have a 20-25-11 record and a 29th place in the rankings.

Hurricanes Allowed Average of 3.1 Goals per Game

Sure, even though the Canadiens have been scoring an average of 2.7 goals per game lately and defensively the Hurricanes have been allowing an average of 3.1 goals per game, the Hurricanes defense have still managed to defend against 78.3 percent of their penalties, while the Canadiens are averaging only 13.1 percent power play.

What this all means is that while the odds may be stacked against Carolina in tonight's Canadiens vs Hurricanes matchup, they may well be 'hungry' enough to pull off a win in front of what will no doubt be a frenzied and hostile Montreal side.

What will make the Hurricanes' endeavor even tougher is the fact that they lost their most recent game, when they went down 4-3 on the road against the Colorado Avalanche, compared to the Canadiens, who unceremoniously dispatched their most recent opponents, the Toronto Maple Leafs, 5-0.

From an NHL betting point of view, the total has gone UNDER in five of Carolina's last six road games, UNDER in eight of Carolina's previous 10 games, UNDER in 11 of Carolina's previous 15 games on the road against Montreal and OVER in five of Carolina's previous seven games against Montreal.

Montreal, meanwhile, is 5-1 SU in their last six games against Carolina, 4-1 SU in their last five games, 4-1 SU in their last five games at home against Carolina. In addition, the total has gone UNDER in 11 of Montreal's previous 15 games at home versus Carolina.
