Toronto Janitor Sweeps Up Multi Million Lottery Prize
Every new immigrant dreams of succeeding in his adopted homeland, and John Addo was no different when he moved from Ghana to Canada 20 years ago.
The man first moved to Montreal before settling in Toronto in 2008, and started out working at an industrial cleaning company.
John Addo would regularly pick up a lottery ticket at a downtown Toronto newsstand, and two weeks ago was no exception.
However, that routine purchase turned Addo's life around when he discovered that his ticket shared in the $50 million Lotto Max win.
Addo explained why it took him four days to come forward and claim his $16.6 million prize.
"When I gave the retailer my ticket and she told me how much I won, I went into shock," he recalled. "I immediately went straight home and lay down for awhile to think about it. Then I called a friend to come over, so that I could tell someone."
Addo said that he would use some of his money to visit his family in Ghana.
The $50 million Lotto Max prize was shared between three winners.
The first to claim his prize was Jonathan Hines of Ontario, who said that as soon as he realized that he had won, he started to cry.
The 61 year old retired petro-chemical worker said that he intends buying a car with part of his winnings, and he will definitely share the jackpot with his family, including his two children and five siblings.
"I can build a house the way I want it, with a nice big TV room and lots of land," he enthused.
