Cake Poker Network Being Sued in Canada
The Cake Poker Network is being sued in a Canadian court by two men who claim that the idea to form the network came from them - and they weren't fairly compensated.
Ryan Bennett and Francois Piette filed the lawsuit in the Supreme Court of British Columbia, stating that they are owed 20% of the poker platform, following an agreement that was signed in 2004.
The two formed Legacy Entertainment and started on the creation of the Legacy Project, which was introduced to the Director of Cake Poker Nicholaos Mellios.
Mellios, at the time, was seeking, through his company, Yummy Interactive, to invest in a new project, and the idea of an online poker platform caught his fancy.
The idea was presented to Mellios and two other listed defendants, Douglas Freese and Christopher Ruck and it was eventually decided that Yummy Interactive would own 80% in the new company and Legacy would retain 20% stakes.
In November 2004, Bennett and Piette were informed that the Legacy Project would be listed offshore because British Columbia businesses were not allowed to operate online poker sites.
However, within a year, both Bennett and Piette were bumped from the project.
Although the pair received what they say are "some dividends", they were nowhere near the 20% originally agreed on.
As such, Bennett and Piette are suing the Cake Poker Network for their fair 20% share of the business.
Today, the Cake Poker Network boasts nearly 70 online poker rooms and the dividends claimed could be worth millions of dollars.
