Paragon Gaming, the group that is hoping to expand the Edgewater Casino and turn it into a mega-casino complex, may have a tougher battle than it originally geared for.

A recent Ipsos Reid poll taken amongst residents of Vancouver, found that just over half were opposed to the idea.

900 adults were polled between March 17th and 21st, including 250 from the City of Vancouver.

53% said that they did not support the proposal, while 43% said that they did.

When questioned if they were were strongly supportive or strongly opposed to the idea, 33% said that they were strongly opposed and only 14% were in strong support.

When it came to polling those who would be most affected by the expansion - the residents of Metro Vancouver - the picture looked a little different, with 48% saying that they supported the idea and 45% opposing it.

Kyle Braid, speaking for Ipsos Public Affairs said about the results: "It does appear that at least some of the perceptions of the potential social costs are higher in the City of Vancouver, and that's probably why opposition's higher within the City of Vancouver than the entire region."

Other statistics that came out of the poll showed:

  • More men than women supported the casino.
  • Six out of ten residents said that they believed that the casino will result in 'significant social costs' to the region.
