The Montreal based online games developer, Amaya Gaming Group, has announced that it has managed to secure a gaming license in the Dominican Republic.

This is the first legal license granted by Dominica and will allow Amaya to launch an online gaming site.

The group said that it hopes to see its casino up and running by the third quarter of 2011.

Amaya Gaming produces games such as online poker, blackjack, slots, Sic Bo and craps.

The Director for Casinos in the Dominican Republic, Conrado Abud said: "Based on our investigations and due diligence, we have decided to authorize Amaya with the only license of its kind to operate online gaming in the country."

"As such, this is a sector of the gaming industry that is rapidly developing in an illegal way," he said. "Amaya was granted the license to redirect this already existing but illegal gaming activity to a site that is secure, legal and trustworthy."

The President and Chief Executive Officer of Amaya, David Baazov said that his company was very pleased to have secured the license from the Minstery of Finance of the Dominican Republic.

"We believe our extensive gaming library and technological capabilities have been key deciding factors in securing this license," he said.

"As one of the fastest growing segments of the entertainment industry, online gaming still represents a significant untapped market segment for Amaya.
