Each year, organizations and businesses in Canada are chosen to appear on the Family Friendly Employer List, based on the benefits that they provide to employees and their families.

This year, the British Columbia Lottery Corporation, which employs nearly 800 people, appeared on the Top Family Friendly Employer Lists for 2011.

The list was created to encourage places of work to think outside the box in terms of how they can benefit the worker's family and provide support so that employees are more likely to want to return to work after having a family.

The BCLC was placed on the list in particular due to the fact that it offers fertility drug treatments through its health benefits plan.

It joins other progressive and forward-thinking groups whose benefits are valued by families.

"Many of these benefits are not big ticket expenses but rather represent an ongoing evolution in how we want to work and an enlightened approach for employers looking to attract and retain their workforces, noted Richard Yerema, the Managing Editor of Canada's Top 100 Employers.

"Less than five years ago, we considered maternity leave and parental leave top up over 20 weeks to be quite generous.

"It still is," he noted, "but now we see more than a few with much more generous top up, ranging up to 95 percent for the full year one's leave."

Other companies on the list, besides the BCLC include BC Public Service which provides on site daycare centers at some locations and Statistics Canada which offers emergency short-term day care services.
