Once one of the 'darlings' of leading UK land and online gambling group, Gala Coral Group, mention the name of Dan Phillips these days in those same hallowed halls and you'll likely be met with stares reminiscent of those turned on Harry Potter when he uttered the dreaded name of Voldemort.

You see, Phillips, a highly experienced online gambling executive did the unthinkable. He left the struggling online gambling arm of Gala Coral - an operation he gave seven years of his professional life to - just when they needed him most. And he allowed himself to be wooed by a Canadian firm.

According to reports, Phillips decided to join leading online gambling software developer and provider Chartwell Technology as VP Operations, where presumably he'll be called upon to use his years of experience and expertise to help build Chartwell Games (International) Ltd into a gaming giant.

It is an encouraging sign that one of the world' seemingly premier online gambling execs has left the comfort of the United Kingdom - a country that embraced online gambling by legalizing and regulating it - for Canada, a fairly liberal country online gambling wise, but one frighteningly close to the U.S.

It's no secret that the United States government abhors all things online gambling and has gone after many non-American online gambling firms and executives using its pitbull-like U.S. Department of Justice. In fact, a few foreign online gaming execs were actually arrested Gestapo-like on U.S. soil.

The arrests made many Canadian companies nervous, and a few even reportedly set sail for greener pastures in Ireland and other far away places. But that was then. Now President Barack Obama's administration seems more open to the idea of legalized online gambling, which is great news.

It means that online gambling companies around the globe that have avoided the lucrative, but dangerous U.S. market could in the not-too-distant future return there. Including Canadian companies like Chartwell Games, who are hand-picking top on line gambling executives like Dan Phillips!
